Doc Talk Radio with Dr. Anne Borik talking about Inflammatory Bowel Disease

January 18th, 2012

Inflammatory Bowel Disease includes Crohns Colitis and Ulcerative Colitis.
It is an autoimmune process that affects people usually before the age of 35. Symptoms include crampy abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, unexplained fevers and can often lead to malnutrition especially in Crohn’s Colitis.
Q:Is there a special diet for this colitis?
A: When the intestine becomes inflamed causing diarrhea and discomfort, I recommend a low residue diet to give the intestine time to heal. Avoid high fiber, eat more well cooked vegetables, white rice, bananas, applesauce, dry toast. BRAT diet= Banana, Rice, Applesauce, Toast.

Research shows that people living in warm sunny climates are less likely to suffer from Inflammatory Bowel Disease. (52% lower risk). This is due to more sun exposure leading to more Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps regulate immunity and inflammation!

Writing Poetry…

December 26th, 2011

Today, while walking through the Tonto National Forest in Payson, Arizona I did what I enjoy very much. That is, I wrote a poem to capture the moment, the experience in real time. i took my iphone out of my pocket and started tapping out the letters and this is what i came up with…
My poem called The Fragrance of…
The fragrance of peace enters in… described in what sounds like silence.
It never sounded so loud, so neat, so quiet, so real.
The fragrance of hope enters in… described in what sounds like a stream.
Flowing forward so steady, so strong, so soft, so real.
The fragrance of God, we enter in…described in what sounds too big to describe.
Filling every space above and beyond, so vast, so great, so sweet, so real.
For unto us a Child is born bridging the gap between us and Him
all wrapped in the fragrance of love!

Antioxidants

October 27th, 2011

the best way to get a variety of antioxidants in your diet is to eat foods that represent all the colors of the rainbow. Each color provides its own unique antioxidant effects. Bright orange, deep yello fruits and vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes and apricots provide one type of antioxidant. Red foods like tomatoes provide another, green vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage and blue and purple foods like blueberries and eggplants have their own antioxidants. The most promising area in antioxidant research is in the area of eye health!

‎’Peppermint makes heartburn worse’. Gastroesophageal Reflux (GERD) occurs because the little ring of muscle at the end of the esophagus does not completely close allowing food to backup into the esophagus from the stomach. Peppermint relaxes that muscle even more and makes GERD worse. Other things that make that ring of muscle weak is smoke, caffeine, fried fatty foods, alcohol, and yes chocolate.
Note: Fresh pineapples aid digestion and relieve GERD. The enzymes in FRESH not canned pineapple is effective. Eat a slice at the end of a meal to help with reflux and digestion!
