Religion is necessary

I found this comprehensive response to the latest viral You tube video called “”why I hate religion but love Jesus”…
The main problem with this video is that Jesus would strongly disagree with it based on what Jesus says in scripture.
1. The idea that Jesus came to abolish religion is simply not true. He literally said the opposite; “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (what were the law and profits? Judaism. What is Judaism? A religion.)
2. Whether you believe in the sacraments or not, there is no doubt that Christ established ritual. …”do this in memory of me!” Christ commanded that we have ritual! According to this video it would seem that to be a Christ-follower is to ignore the commands he gives.
3. Christ gave certain men very distinct roles. ”If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retains. (John 20:23). He also gave men power to make decisions concerning doctrine; “I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven, (Matthew 18:18). He built a church, “And I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”(Matthew 16:18)
4. The guy in the video complains that religion is behavior modification and a list of rules to follow and doesn’t get to the core of the matter. My response is that if a religion is just a set of rules and not a love affair, it is dead, I agree. But the idea of following rules is exactly what Jesus commands us to do. He says, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” You cannot have one without the other.
5. The guy in the video says he loves the bible… This is great because so do I. Did Christ hand out bibles before He ascended into Heaven? No, the bible is the product of a religion.
6. What is the number one most charitable organization on the planet? The Red Cross? NO. It is the Roman Catholic Church.
7. The video asks…”if religion is so great, why has it started so many wars.?” A man may strike another because he is filled with bitter anger. He may also strike a man to stop him from killing a baby. The point is simply that it is the person accountable for the fight, not the religion. If it is a bad thing to fight, the religion is the good for which is forgotten and man acts bad. There is no more reason for rejecting religion than for rejecting your wife, who if threatened by a stranger might lead you to kill. It is not the religion that acts, it is the human weakness that acts. It is not the wife that acts, it is the situation.
….can keep going, but I think the point is taken.
